Chargebee vs Stripe Billing is a choice between a billing system that sits on top of many payment gateways and billing built into the payment processor you may already use. Chargebee connects to more than 40 gateways, Stripe included, and has deeper entitlements and more packaged billing options. Stripe Billing has lower published entry pricing and needs no second system if you already take payments with Stripe.

We make ChargeBell, which sends Stripe events to Slack. It works with Stripe only, so keep that in mind as you read. The scores in this article are our editorial opinion. Every fact comes from Chargebee's and Stripe's own sites and docs, checked October 1, 2026.

Pricing model
As of October 2026, Chargebee's pricing page lists the Flow plan at $0 a month plus 0.80% of monthly invoicing volume, or $99 a month plus 0.65%. The second option costs less once you invoice more than $66,000 a month. Flow includes 100 million usage events a month. Enterprise is custom priced. You also pay your payment gateway's fees, because Chargebee bills through a gateway such as Stripe, Adyen, or Braintree.
As of October 2026, Stripe Billing pricing is 0.7% of Billing volume on pay as you go. The Pay Monthly option starts at $620 a month on a one-year contract, covers up to $100,000 of monthly Billing volume, and charges 0.67% above that. Stripe's card processing fees come on top. For US domestic cards, Stripe's pricing page lists 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful charge.
Here is the billing fee alone at $100,000 of monthly volume. Chargebee Flow costs $800 at 0.80%, or $749 on the $99 option. Stripe Billing costs $700 on pay as you go, or $620 on Pay Monthly with an annual contract. Both vendors define billing volume in their own terms, so model your own numbers.
Chargebee, 4 out of 5. A free base and a clear breakeven point, plus a gateway bill on top. Stripe Billing, 4 out of 5. A lower starting rate, and a fixed monthly option that needs an annual contract.
Subscription features
Chargebee's Flow plan includes calendar billing, advance invoices, offline invoicing, consolidated invoicing, Net-D payment terms, gift subscriptions, credit notes, coupons, and a customer portal. It supports flat, tiered, stairstep, volume, usage, and seat-based pricing. Account hierarchies and multi-entity management are paid add-ons on Enterprise.
Stripe Billing includes recurring billing, a customer portal, quotes, invoice auto-reconciliation, and multiphase subscription schedules for planned plan changes. Stripe also handles the payment itself, so subscriptions and charges live in one account.
Chargebee, 5 out of 5. More billing options come packaged on the base plan. Stripe Billing, 4 out of 5. It covers most subscription businesses, with fewer packaged extras such as gift subscriptions or calendar billing.
Chargebee proration vs Stripe proration
Proration is the credit or charge for a plan change partway through a billing period. Chargebee prorates by the day or to the millisecond, and millisecond is the default. You set the mode for the whole site and can turn proration off for a single change. If the customer already paid the invoice, the credit is refundable and applies to future invoices. If the invoice is unpaid, the credit reduces the amount due right away. The Estimates API previews the charges and credits before you make a change.
Stripe prorates to the second by default. Each update takes a proration_behavior of create_prorations, always_invoice, or none. You can preview the next invoice before a change and pass a proration_date so the preview and the update match. Proration customizations let you prorate by day, hour, week, or month instead.
Chargebee, 5 out of 5. Two clear modes, a per-change override, and a preview API. Stripe Billing, 5 out of 5. Per-request control, previews, and adjustable time granularity.
Chargebee entitlements vs Stripe entitlements
Entitlements say which features and limits a customer's plan gives them. Chargebee's entitlements have four feature types. Switch features are on or off. Quantity features have set numeric limits, such as 10 seats. Range features allow a minimum and maximum. Custom features cover levels that aren't numbers, like a support tier. You attach entitlements to plans, add-ons, and charges, and you can override them on a single subscription.
Stripe Entitlements attach features to products. When a customer subscribes, upgrades, downgrades, or cancels, Stripe sends entitlements.active_entitlement_summary.updated, and the List Active Entitlements API returns what the customer has. A Stripe feature has a name, a lookup_key, and metadata. It has no built-in quantity or range, so numeric limits live in your own code or metadata.
Chargebee, 5 out of 5. Four feature types, catalog-level and subscription-level control. Stripe Billing, 3 out of 5. Simple on or off features with good webhooks, and no built-in limits.
Usage-based billing
With usage-based billing you charge for what a customer uses. Chargebee ingests usage events one at a time or in batches through its API, by file upload, or by hand. The events don't need a fixed schema. Its pricing page lists custom SQL meters, included usage with overages, and usage thresholds on Flow. Flow includes 100 million usage events a month, and Enterprise goes up to 500 million.
Stripe now has two options. Stripe's docs say Metronome, which is now part of Stripe, is the recommended choice for new usage-based integrations. It adds prepaid credit drawdown, commits, ramp schedules, and dimensional pricing. The same page lists gaps. Metronome doesn't support Connect, Workflows, or the Stripe Dashboard, and has limited Checkout support. Basic usage-based billing on Billing Meters still works with those, but it reconciles credits only at invoice time.
Chargebee, 5 out of 5. Usage metering, limits, and pricing come in one plan. Stripe Billing, 4 out of 5. Both options are capable, but you have to choose between them and accept the trade-offs.
Dunning and payment retries
Dunning is how a billing system retries failed payments and reminds customers. Chargebee's Dunning v2 has a smart mode with up to 12 retries timed from past transaction data, or a custom mode with up to 5 retries you schedule. It sends reminder emails during the dunning period. When the period ends, you choose whether to cancel the subscription and whether to mark the invoice unpaid, void it, or write it off.
Stripe's Smart Retries use an AI model to time each attempt. The recommended default is 8 tries within 2 weeks, and you can set a window from 1 week up to 2 months. A custom schedule allows up to 3 retries. When retries run out, Stripe cancels the subscription, marks it unpaid, or leaves it past due, based on your settings. Billing includes up to 3 recovery automations. See Smart Retries for how the timing works.
Chargebee, 5 out of 5. Smart or custom retries and detailed end-of-dunning actions. Stripe Billing, 5 out of 5. Model-timed retries, a configurable window, and automations by segment.
Revenue recognition
Revenue recognition turns billing into recognized revenue and deferred revenue under ASC 606 or IFRS 15. Chargebee RevRec is a separate product for Chargebee Billing customers. Its pricing page asks you to book a demo for the Performance plan. The Enterprise plan can pull data from other billing systems, Stripe included.
Stripe Revenue Recognition is also a paid add-on. As of October 2026, its published pricing starts at $25 a month on a monthly plan, with annual plans for higher volumes. It produces journal entries, revenue waterfalls, and balance sheet and income statement reports, and it can import data from outside Stripe.
Chargebee, 4 out of 5. Strong multi-source support on Enterprise, with pricing only by request. Stripe Billing, 4.5 out of 5. Published pricing and reports inside the Stripe Dashboard.
Integrations and Slack alerts
Chargebee lists Xero, QuickBooks, Zapier, and Slack as included on Flow. The HubSpot CRM integration is a paid add-on. Salesforce and NetSuite are paid add-ons on Enterprise. Its built-in Slack app posts sign ups, payments, invoices, and cancellations to one channel. We rated it 3.8 out of 5 in our Chargebee Slack integration review.
Stripe has an official Slack app that posts messages from Stripe Workflows, so you build each alert as a workflow. Third-party tools also read Stripe events. ChargeBell, which we make, is one of them. It posts failed payments, cancellations, disputes, and payouts to the channels you pick, with quiet hours and digests. See the Stripe Slack integration page for details.
Chargebee, 4.5 out of 5. A Slack app that works without building anything, and broad finance integrations. Stripe Billing, 4.5 out of 5. A first-party Slack app plus third-party tools, with more setup per alert.
Who should pick Chargebee and who should pick Stripe Billing
- Pick Chargebee if you use more than one payment gateway. It bills through 40+ gateways, so you can keep Adyen, Braintree, or GoCardless next to Stripe.
- Pick Chargebee if your plans have numeric limits. Quantity and range entitlements save you from building limit checks yourself.
- Pick Chargebee if you need calendar billing, gift subscriptions, or consolidated invoices without custom code.
- Pick Stripe Billing if you already take payments with Stripe. You skip a second system and a sync between them.
- Pick Stripe Billing if you want lower entry pricing. 0.7% with no monthly fee is the lowest published starting rate of the two.
- Pick Stripe Billing if your features are simple on or off flags. Stripe Entitlements and its webhook cover that case.
If you choose Stripe Billing, watch failed subscription payments and cancellations from the first day, because involuntary churn starts with the first declined renewal.
